Environmentally Friendly Synthesis of Cardanol-Based Polyesters and Their Application as Poly(lactic acid) Additives

Byproducts derived from the food industry are an interesting biomass to valorize as they cheap source, their generation does not compete with and feed production, utilization solves waste disposal issue. In this work, we focused on production of a series polyesters using cardanol-derived diol produced inedible shell cashew nuts. The synthesized polymers 100% biobased since diacid components structure (adipic acid succinic acid) can also be bio-derived monomers. Moreover, overall process is paradigm for green circular economy synthesis was conducted via mild enzymatic catalysis (T < 90 °C) in solventless system. final workup procedure recover materials biomass-derived solvent methyl-tetrahydrofuran, therefore presenting methodology that include any petroleum-based component. This work led biocatalyzed linear cardanol-based having mean average molecular weights between 1800 4100 g mol–1 low dispersity values (2 D̵), which were used plasticize poly(lactic acid), leading increase elongation at break resulting blends.
